Minor Oral Surgery & Wisdom Teeth Removal

Your Wisdom teeth are located right at the back of your mouth and are the last to come through, usually in your late teens or early twenties. At this stage, as all your teeth should have emerged, there may not be enough space for these latecomers to grow through properly.

 

The reason you may need treatment

If there is insufficient space in your mouth, wisdom teeth may start to emerge at an angle, get stuck against the tooth in front, only partially come through or stay trapped under the bone.

 

The benefits

Removing wisdom teeth can eliminate the pain and discomfort caused by impaction. It can also prevent damage to nearby teeth, lesson the risk of developing tooth decay or gun disease, and ensure orthodontic treatment is more successful.

 

The procedure

We take an x-ray to check the position of the wisdom teeth and from that decide whether they need to be extracted. We numb the area, if the tooth is yet to come through, we make a small incision in the gum and remove any bone covering the tooth. We then separate the tissues that connect the tooth to the bone and take out the tooth.     

 

What else you need to know

After extraction, you will need to ensure the affected area heals well, be careful not to disturb the sight of extraction by sticking to soft foods and eating on the other side of your mouth. Keep the area clean by rinsing gently with warm, salty water.
